Library lending terms

Libraries buy audiobooks differently from listeners. Instead of one download, a library buys a licence that sets how many people can borrow the title at once and how long the licence lasts. These are the licences Chiify Audio titles are offered under.

Availability varies by title — an author can turn any of these off for their own work. Prices are set as a multiple of the title’s retail price and are shown in the feed we send to each distributor.

Pay per loan

The library pays a small amount each time somebody borrows it. Nothing up front.

OCOU-24M

One borrower at a time for two years, unlimited loans in that window, then the licence ends.

One copy, one user — 26 loans

OCOU-26

One borrower at a time, and the licence runs out after 26 loans. The library re-buys if it is still popular.

One copy, one user — permanent

OCOU-P

The library buys the audiobook outright and lends it to one person at a time, for as long as they want to keep it on the shelf.

Unlimited simultaneous — 12 months

SIMUL-12M

Everyone in the library system can listen at the same time for a year. Used for book clubs and school reading lists.

What is not allowed

A library licence covers lending to that library’s own members. It does not cover copying the audio file, public performance, resale, or making it available outside the library’s lending system. Digital rights management and access control are handled by the library platform, not by Chiify Audio.
